Why Trailers Constructed of Aluminum?
In 1983, Sooner was one of the first to begin building aluminum trailers. Why Aluminum? Aluminum trailers have become the trailers of choice for discriminating horse and livestock people. They are 30-40% lighter than a steel trailer and easier to pull which means improved gas mileage and less wear and tear on a vehicle. In addition, the aluminum used by Sooner Trailer engineers is pound for pound five times stronger than steel. Aluminum is corrosion resistant, so it is far less susceptible to deterioration due to weather conditions. In addition, they look great and will continue to look new long after steel trailers have rusted through.
Aluminum trailers are however, more expensive to build. Much of the aluminum comes in the form of extrusions, and each extrusion has to be blueprinted, so it requires a great deal of engineering. Sooner blueprints all its extrusions, and then an aluminum company mixes the alloys and extrudes it. These alloys have a wide variety of metals that provide the structural integrity that Sooner requires.
